Foraged Fire Starters

I like making these simple foraged fire starters because they are so easy to make and can be made with ingredients that you likely already have on hand (or in your backyard). They store well until they are needed and are a good way to use up leftover wax. They are a fun craft to do with kids and one that will inspire a trip or two outdoors to enjoy the elements.

Ingredients

Wax (I like to use beeswax or leftover candle wax, preferably natural like soy or coconut wax)

Dried plant material like bark, pinecones, twigs, and lichen

Cupcake liners or silicon molds

Instructions

Step 1: Head out and gather a few dry materials like fallen pinecones, twigs, lichen, and bits of bark. Make sure not to peel bark off of trees and look on the ground for what’s ready to be collected. You can also add bits of wool and dried coffee grounds.

I make sure to use natural wax like beeswax or leftover soy wax from candles, as petroleum-based waxes can release potentially harmful chemicals (like benzene) into the air. A very good reason to stick to natural candles in the home.

Step 2: Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners, egg carton sections or any leak-proof paper liner. You can also use silicon molds for these.

Step 3: Pour your melted wax into the muffin tin and let cool. While the wax is still soft, add your dry materials. Let cool completely, and store in a dry and cool spot. These are great to give as gifts, or use them to help kickstart your campfires!
