Hot Chocolate Elixir Blend

I love making homemade hot chocolate blends because I know they will be happily enjoyed, they are easy to make, they store well, are full of nourishing minerals, and are always a crowd pleaser. Pack them up in mason jars with a label, date, and there you have it, a delicious gift for all.

Rich in essential minerals such as magnesium, iron, and manganese, and the bitter alkaloid theobromine, cacao gifts us with luscious and nurturing support. Beyond the nutritional capabilities, cacao stimulates the release of endorphins and boosts serotonin levels, gifting those who receive her nourishment with an invitation to open their hearts to her medicine. Cacao has the potential to elevate our mood and enhance feelings of love and connection, and has deeply rooted history in ancient traditions of many Indigenous cultures in Mexico and Central and South America, from the Mayans and Aztecs and from what we know, even going as far back as 1500 b.c.

For thousands of years (if not longer) the spirit of Cacao has been honored for her heart-opening medicine in the form of ceremony, and even as a currency, recognizing her rich cultural and historical significance. Drinking Cacao serves as a delicious reminder to deepen into our love centers and embrace the whole world with compassion and kindness. So, whether enjoyed in ceremony, or a cozy cup of hot chocolate on a winter’s day, Cacao nourishes our cells, our spirits, and our communities.

When making elixir blends, I love to visit my favourite bulk shops for high-quality ingredients that I can fill up my own jars with.

Ingredients:

  • Raw cacao powder or pure cocoa powder

  • Sweetener of choice. I like to use organic coconut sugar or maple sugar.

  • Sea salt

  • Optional: Medicinal mushrooms or herbs of choice (Reishi, Maca Root, Cinnamon, etc.)

  • Optional: Marshmallows

  • Optional: Powdered collagen

  • Optional: Powdered milk of choice

Your ratios will depend on how big of a batch you’re making, so play around, use your intuition and don’t be afraid to taste test!

Instructions

Step 1: Blend ingredients in a large bowl. All of your ingredients should be dry and powdered. For a dark chocolate blend, I like to do a 2:1 ratio of cacao to powdered coconut milk. For milk chocolate, you might wish to do a 1:1 ratio. You can also skip the powdered milk all together, and add fresh milk of your choice in when making a warm cup. The amount of sugar you add will depend on what you like and what type of sugar you’re using. For example, coconut sugar is less sweet than cane sugar.

When I’m making blends for my own use, I love to add in medicinal mushroom powders like lions mane or reishi and root powders like maca, or dandelion, and of course, top with a sprinkle of rose petals. If you’re adding marshmallows, set them to the side for now.

Step 2: Once your blend is well mixed, boil some water and make yourself a cup! Taste it and see if it needs adjusting. If it’s just how you want it, scoop the blend into jars and add the marshmallows on top. If gifting, make sure to date and add a label.
